An award and strong presence of MPIP at IRMMW-THz 2013 conference

September 11, 2013

With 8 oral presentations, of which 3 were invited, MPIP's Ultrafast dynamics and THz spectroscopy group (group leader Prof. Dmitry Turchinovich, department head Prof. Mischa Bonn) was one of the biggest contributors to 38th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz) held in Mainz on 01-06.09.2013. Søren Jensen, PhD student in the group, received a student paper award for his presentation "Hot carrier multiplication in graphene". In this work, which was published in Nature Physics this year, Søren and his colleagues have demonstrated that graphene allows for extremely efficient conversion of optical energy, such as the energy coming from the Sun, into the energy of the electrons which can be used for generation of electric power.

IRMMW-THz conference is the oldest and the largest conference in infrared, millimeter and terahertz wave community. This year it attracted more than 670 participants. As the final event of the conference, over 20 international participants visited the Terahertz Labs at MPIP.
