Dr. Taichi Ikeda

Taichi Ikeda majored chemistry at department of technology in Tohoku University. He got his diploma in chemical engineering in 1997 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Takatoshi Miura.

Then he moved to Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) where he studied in the field of supramolecular chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nobuhiko Yui. He got his PhD through the study on “Formation of supramolecular structure consisting of cyclodextrin- based molecular tube” in 2002.
After getting PhD, he worked as a PostDoc in the group of Dr. Toshimi Shimizu at National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science (AIST). He conducted STM observation of self-assembled monolayers of alkyl-substituted porphyrin derivatives at solid-liquid interface.

From July 2004, he joined in the group of Prof. Dr. J. Fraser Stoddart at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He synthesized some interlocked compounds and characterized its electrochemical properties.
He got a permanent position at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in October 2006.
He worked on the synthesis of thiophene-based interlocked compounds and its characterization as organic electronic materials. On June 2010, he launched “MPI-NIMS International Joint Lab” at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Mainz, Germany).

At the MPI, he is focusing on preparation of thiophene-based soft materials on the surface and its characterization using the advanced methodology in the experimental physics group at MPI-P. Based on these characterizations, we will develop new electrochemically-controllable smart soft materials from nano-scale (NEMS) to macro-scale (artificial muscle etc.).
