10 Leading Chinese Scientists in Europe: Si Wu receives award for research on photoresponsive materials

For his academic achievements, Dr. Si Wu, project leader at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, is recognized with the certificate “10 Leading Chinese Scientists in Europe”. In his work he focuses on the properties of photoresponsive materials that can be controlled by light with high spatiotemporal resolution. Possible fields of application include phototherapy, solar enery storage, healable coatings and information storage. [more]

MPI-P scientists take part in new research project “PlastX”

Together with two other research facilities, a team led by Dr. Frederik Wurm, project leader at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P), participates in the project “PlastX – Plastics as a systemic risk for social-ecological supply systems”. The junior research group supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFB) investigates ways for a sustainable management of plastic and plastic waste. The scientists of the MPI-P focus their research on the chemical synthesis of new polymers, in order to develop biodegradable plastics that help to reduce the amount of plastic waste. [more]

George Fytas receives ERC Advanced Grant for phononics project

The external member of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P), Prof. Dr. George Fytas, has been granted over two million euros by the European Research Council (ERC) for retrieving a dispersion relation for quantized sound waves, so-called phonons, in soft structures. [more]

Tanja Weil elected into the Senate of the Leibniz Association

Prof. Dr. Tanja Weil, director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, has been elected as senator of the section “C – Life Sciences” of the Leibniz Association. The Senate is responsible for the science policy objectives of the Leibniz Association and acts in an advisory capacity. It issues recommendations on both the strategic development of the Association and its member institutions and on increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of research and services. The quadrennial appointment of Weil starts on July 1, 2016. [more]

Four scientists receive “Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad 2015”

Girls’ Day 2016: what is polymer research?

Polymers, similar to a string of pearls with every bead representing a so-called monomer, are not only a wide, but also interesting field of research. At the Girls’ Day on April 28, 2016, 21 girls aged twelve to 17 years could see for themselves, what it means to work as a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P). The participants met the scientific staff and even conducted experiments in the laboratories. This way, the girls received a comprehensive insight into the professions at the institute. [more]

Measuring optoelectronic properties: graphene nanoribbons proved to be ideal for photodetectors and telecommunications devices

Investigating the optical properties of graphene nanoribbons, a team of international scientists, among others of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) in Mainz, has demonstrated the capability of this material to absorb and emit light. Based on these findings, the industrial use of graphene nanoribbons in different optoelectronic devices and telecommunications draws closer, paving the way toward graphene-based lasers and a highly efficient data transfer.
