Polymers and alcohol: The story of competing depletion forces

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, together with their collaborator Carlos Marques from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Strasbourg, France, have proposed a possible microscopic mechanism of polymer swelling in poor solvent mixtures. While the collapse of a polymer in poor solvent is well understood, the observed swelling of polymers in mixture of two poor, but miscible solvents seems paradoxical. By combining simulations and theoretical concepts, known from polymer physics and colloidal science, they have shown that the phenomenon of polymer swelling, within the intermediate mixing ratios of poor solvent mixtures, naturally emerges at ambient conditions, when an appropriate balance of the entropically driven depletion interactions is achieved. Their results and findings are published in the most recent issue of the scientific journal “Nature Communications". [more]

How do liquid drops slide over solid surfaces?

A larger force is needed to set in motion stationary droplets than to keep moving droplets in motion. This behavior is already known for solids on surfaces. New Max Planck Partner Group with the University of Valencia

The Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) continues to expand its international networking and cooperation: since June 2017, the institute has established a new Partner Group for colloidal methods in multifunctional materials at the University of Valencia. The Spanish lab, headed by Dr. Rafael Muñoz-Espí, will closely cooperate with Prof. Dr. Katharina Landfester’s department "Physical Chemistry of Polymers" at the MPI-P for the next three years, with an option of a two-year prolongation. Raffaello Potestio has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant for the project VARIAMOLS

The European Research Council supports the project "Variable resolution algorithms for macromolecular simulations – VARIAMOLS” by Dr. Raffaello Potestio with an ERC Starting Grant of 1.4 million euros. The group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) will develop and apply novel techniques to represent a large biomolecule, such as a protein or an assembly of several proteins, with models that are at the same time chemically accurate and computationally efficient. The project will be carried out at the Physics Department of the University of Trento, Italy, and is scheduled to start on January 1, 2018. [more]

Klaus Müllen of Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) in Mainz and Xinliang Feng of Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden / Technische Universität Dresden have been awarded the Hamburg Science Award 2017, which this year was dedicated to the subject of energy efficiency.
