Burkhard Dünweg

Theoretical Physics / Computer Simulation

Burkhard Dünweg studied physics at the Technical University Munich and at the University of Mainz, where he joined the group of Prof. K. Binder. There he obtained his Diploma (1987) and Ph.D. (1991) degrees, based on Monte Carlo studies of order-disorder phase transitions in alloys (diploma) and on large-scale Molecular Dynamics simulations on the dynamic behavior of dilute polymer solutions. He then joined the Center for Simulational Physics at the University of Georgia, Athens, USA, as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, collaborating with Prof. D. P. Landau; this stay was interrupted by a two-month Guest Scientist visit at the Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Jülich (1992). From November 1993 to April 1996 he worked as an assistant in Prof. Binder's group in Mainz, and joined the MPI for Polymer Research (Theory Group) in May 1996. In December 2000 he completed his "Habilitation" in Theoretical Physics at the University of Mainz. Since April 2004, he works as an Associate Editor for Physical Review E, where he is responsible for polymer physics and computational physics. In 2005, he worked as substitute professor in Saarbrücken. In 2008 he was appointed apl. Professor at the University of Mainz.

His scientific background comprises statistical physics, phase transitions, random processes and transport theory, hydrodynamics, polymer physics (in particular dynamics), and computer simulation methodology (Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics, Brownian Dynamics, Dissipative Particle Dynamics, Lattice Boltzmann).

His main research interests are centered around the following topics:
