Congr-otter-ulations! - Dr. Jannik presented and defended his PhD

February 12, 2026

Heartfelt congratulations to Jannik Buhr on defending his PhD thesis!

Jannik was a PhD in our group, where his research centered on simulating and understanding hydrolytic and homolytic bond rupture in collagen. For this he developed sophisticated QM/MM workflows, umbrella sampling simulations and, together with Eric Hartmann and Kai Riedmiller, he developed KIMMDY - a biomolecular reaction emulator.

As our long term sys-admin we further honored his contribution with our own cluster's new name: OTTER! (Jannik's favorite animal)

His doctoral hat equally reflects his love for otters, his many contributions to open source coding projects and many hobbies, ranging from Highlining to theater.

We couldn’t be prouder of his remarkable achievement, a true reflection of his dedication and hard work, and wish him all the best. May this be the start of many exciting new chapters.
