The S. aureus pigment staphyloxanthin (STX) modifies the structure of PG lipid bilayers

In this study, by combining simulations and experiments, we demostrate that the Staphylococcus aureus golden pigment staphyloxanthin modifies the structure of PG lipid bilayers.  We hope this information can help clarifying STX’s dual role, acting as an antioxidant while preserving membrane integrity, and thus contribute to developing strategies to tackle the global health problem of the rise of Staphylococcus aureus multi-drug resistant variants.
