PhD / Postdoc position in terahertz-infrared two-dimensional spectroscopy of proteins

Job Offer from June 28, 2022

We have an open PhD / Postdoc position in the Department of Molecular Spectroscopy of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research ( The research in the department focuses on the molecular structure and dynamics of condensed phase materials (soft, liquid, and solid), mainly using methods of (ultrafast) optical spectroscopy.  The current project will explore terahertz vibrations of peptides and proteins. Terahertz vibrations - excited at room temperature - are believed to play an essential role in protein functioning and regulation. However, experimental insights into terahertz modes are very scarce, primarily due to spectral congestion. To eliminate the congestion and resolve vibrations of molecular constituents, the project will employ two-dimensional terahertz-infrared-visible (2D TIRV) spectroscopy, recently developed in our group. The study will use known mid-infrared oscillators of a protein backbone and side chains to probe the terahertz vibrational spectrum at specific locations in a molecule. The primary goal is to investigate model peptides in the most abundant secondary structures and examine the possibility of using the method to study protein

We encourage motivated individuals to apply with interest in molecular physics, and a strong background in physics and physical chemistry / chemical physics. Candidates eligible for the PhD position should have an MSc degree at the start of employment; previous experience in spectroscopy and optics is advantageous but not required. Candidates for the postdoc position should have PhD degree by the start of employment and extensive hands-on experience in experimental non-linear optical spectroscopy, preferably using transient absorption / 2D infrared / 2D electronic spectroscopy techniques or similar.

The candidates interested in a PhD position (3 years) should submit their cover letter, CV, transcript of grades and contacts of two reference persons. The candidates interested in a Postdoc position (1 year + possible 1-2 year renewal) should submit their cover letter, CV, including a list of publications and contacts of three reference persons. The position is open immediately in the group of Dr. Maksim Grechko. We request to send applications and inquiries via e-mail to grechko[at] Applications will be continuously reviewed until the position is filled.
