Zhixuan was born and raised in Nanning, China. He studied chemistry at Sun Yat-sen University and obtained his B.S. in 2013. He moved to the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA, where he completed his Ph. D. research on supramolecular coordination complexes with emergent functions under the supervision of Professor Peter J. Stang. He moved to Germany in March 2019 and joined the group of Professor Tanja Weil at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research as a postdoctoral researcher. He was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship on March 2020. He was promoted to a group leader position on April 2021.
