The Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Department of Physical Chemistry of Polymers headed by Prof. Dr. Katharina Landfester is inviting applications for a position as

Postdoctoral position

starting as soon as possible.

To strengthen the research in the field of nanomedicine, the department of Prof. Dr. Katharina Landfester within the MPI for Polymer Research is installing a new 300 kV Titan Krios G4 with a Gatan Continuum K3 EELS spectrometer, capable of EFTEM imaging and EEL spectroscopy. This worldwide unique combination of analytical and cryo-TEM opens up manifold, unexplored possibilities. Be the first to extend the methods of structural biology with the possibilities of an analytical TEM.

We are looking for a candidate with strong expertise in Single Particle Analysis or Subtomogram Averaging, ideally with sound experience in algorithm development. The successful candidate will be in charge of investigating the influence of a colloidal surface on the protein structure. This challenging, new research area is at the interface between molecular biology and materials science. The adsorption of proteins to a colloid is the key feature, that determines the uptake process of colloidal nanocarriers used for drug delivery. Within this project, the successful candidate will develop new methods to combine the energy filter with conventional 3DEM methods. Moreover, independent research proposals based on the use of an analytical energy filter in structural biology are highly welcome.

Job requirements

The essential requirements for this post are as follows:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics or closely aligned disciplines, or an equivalent level of professional qualifications.
  • Experience in SPA / Subtomogram Averaging
  • Motivation to inter-disciplinary research
  • Programming experience

Working scientific language at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research is English. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons and women. Subject to personal qualifications employees are remunerated according to salary group E13 TV-B.

Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

Your application should be sent by e-mail to:  with the subject line “3DEM of  protein-colloid complexes”. Your application should include:

  1. a letter of interest (max. 1 page), clearly stating the specific interest of the candidate to join the group, work on this project, his/her career goals, etc.
  2. CV
  3. grade transcripts or equivalent record of excellent academic performance
