PhD position Interfacial Water

Job Offer from February 18, 2022

The Surface Spectroscopy Group (Dr. Nikita Kavokine, Dr. Yuki Nagata, and Prof. Mischa Bonn) at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany, employs advanced experimental/theoretical methods to probe the structure and dynamics of interfacial water at the molecular level. We are looking for highly motivated PD/PhD candidates who are interested in the research of interfacial water.

Applicants for the theory sub-group who possess a strong background in molecular dynamics simulation, ab initio calculation, and/or machine learning approaches are desirable. For the experimental sub-group, candidates with a strong background of the spectroscopic field are desirable.

The projects can be

1. Structure and dynamics of water explored by (time-resolved) sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy (experiment)

2. Quantum effects at solid-water interfaces by using experimental method (including SFG)

3. Theoretical modeling of the surface specific vibrational spectroscopy (simulation).

Note that we would also be happy to think about exciting new research directions together with the candidates.

If you are interested in this job, please send an application to Dr. Yuki Nagata (nagata@mpip-mainz.mpg.de).

For a PhD application, the scores of bachelor and master degrees together with one recommendation letter should be included in the application. For a PD application, candidates should provide two recommendation letters in their application.

We shall start reviewing applications from 15 April 2022 until the position is filled. The starting date is flexible.
