About the group and the project:

The Minerva Fast Track group led by Dr. Ulrike Kraft in the Department of Molecular Electronics at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz is looking for a highly motivated and curiosity-driven PhD student with interest in the chemistry and physics of organic electronic materials and devices.

At the interface of materials science, physics and chemistry, we are interested in charge transport, through organic electronic materials and devices, their operational and environmental stability as well as a variety of organic electronic and ionic applications such as flexible and stretchable (bio) sensors. Due to their printability, mechanical flexibility and low Young's modulus that is in compliance with biological tissues organic electronic materials are very well suited for such applications.

The selected candidate will conduct cutting edge research at the interface of physics, chemistry, and materials science. As part of the Department of Molecular Electronics led by Prof. Paul Blom, the successful candidate will benefit from a stimulating research environment in a diverse and interdisciplinary team with access to state-of-the–art facilities.

The ideal candidate:

We are looking for a highly motivated student with background either in physics, materials science, chemistry, polymer science or related fields. Previous experimental experience is an advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English or German is mandatory.

The starting date of the position is flexible within autumn/winter 2022 (earliest September 2022).

Your tasks and techniques you will learn:

  • Ink formulation, inkjet printing and ink characterization of organic electronic inks (e.g. conductive polymers such as PEDOT:PSS)
  • Surface activation and functionalization
  • Structural characterization by atomic force microscopy and profilometry
  • Electrical characterization and evaluation of device parameter
