Dr. Tomasz Marszalek
Dr. Tomasz Marszalek studied Technical Physics (Bachelor) and Mechanical Engineering at the Lodz University of Technology, where he gained his Master of Science. In 2006, he joined to the group of Professor Jacek Ulanski at the Department of Molecular Physics, where he completed his dissertation in 2012 (Chemical Technology). He started his 1st postdoctoral position in the group of Professor Klaus Müllen at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P). After 4 years at MPI-P, Tomasz decided to change the research group and joined to group of Professor Uwe Bunz at Institut für Organische Chemie at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Germany, keeping at the same time his status as postdoctoral guest-researcher at the MPI-P in the Molecular Electronics group of Professor Paul Blom. Since mid-2016 he has been partially employed as a researcher at the Lodz University of Technology in the Department of Molecular Physics. In the frame of First Team programme of Foundation of Polish Science in October 2017 he developed his first own independent research group which is focused at physical-chemical aspects of π-conjugated self-organizing systems and their potential application in organic electronic field. In January 2018 he additionally joined to the Department of Molecular Electronics of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research as a group leader.
An emerging new technology – organic electronics – is approaching the stage of a large-scale industrial application. This is due to a remarkable progress in synthesis of a variety of organic semiconductors, allowing one to design and to fabricate, so far on a laboratory scale, different organic electronic devices of satisfactory performance. However, a complete technology requires upgrading of fabrication procedures of all elements of electronic devices and circuits, which not only comprise active layers, but also electrodes, dielectrics, insulators, substrates and protecting/encapsulating coatings.
The following research areas are under interest of Tomasz Marszalek:
Identification and characterization of the bottlenecks in organic field-effect transistors fabricated by solution processing;
Role of substituents group and chemical structure on self-assembly, morphology and charge carrier transport in low and high molecular weight organic semiconductors;
Identification of the impact of interfacial microstructure and interfaces on charge carrier transport in organic/inorganic thin semiconductor films.
