Dr. Gert-Jan Wetzelaer
Gert-Jan Wetzelaer obtained an MSc degree in Applied Physics at the University of Groningen in 2009. In 2014, he obtained a PhD degree with highest honors from the University of Groningen. His doctoral research focused on charge transport and recombination in organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells, under supervision of Prof. Paul W.M. Blom. Subsequently, he continued as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Groningen on biophotovoltaic cells involving photosynthetic proteins under supervision of Prof. Andreas Herrmann . In 2015, he obtained a position as group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany. His research focuses on device physics of organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells, as well as perovskite solar cells.
Research Interests
To make devices such as organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells more efficient and stable, it is of great importance to understand their device physics. Our group focuses on understanding fundamental processes in organic and hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors, such as charge injection, charge transport, and charge recombination, as well as optical processes. We investigate these phenomena both in experiment and theory. Based on improved understanding, we develop strategies to enhance the efficiency and stability of thin-film optoelectronic devices. We also aim to design novel materials to be able to optimize devices from both a materials and device-design perspective.
