Towards more environmentally responsible research

My Green Lab Certificate for the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research

June 25, 2025

At the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, the laboratories of the Landfester department have successfully obtained the My Green Lab certification, sending a strong signal for sustainable research. Following a comprehensive evaluation of laboratory practices, equipment, waste management, and procurement processes, the lab’s commitment to more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient operations was recognized with the highest level – the “Green” certificate.

As part of the certification process, several measures have already been implemented: For example, a “Fridge Day” was introduced, during which cooling devices were defrosted, cleaned, and optimized. As a result, one freezer (-20 °C), two refrigerators, and one ULT box (-85 °C) could be switched off. On “Pump Day,” the laboratory’s pump inventory was serviced and improved. In addition, reminder stickers were placed on certain devices to prompt users to turn them off when not in use. Cooling packs are now centrally organized for all lab members, and a sustainability table with useful tips has been set up. New employees are introduced to the lab’s sustainability practices during the SNIP course.

With this certification, the institute joins a growing number of research institutions committed to environmental protection and the efficient use of resources.
