Max Planck-Bristol Centre for Minimal Biology

The Centre for Minimal Biology is a partnership between the University of Bristol in England and the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science in Germany to investigate the foundations of life from non-living constituents. The research center is jointly led by 6 research groups: Professors Imre Berger, Stephen Mann and Dek Woolfson at the University of Bristol and Professors Joachim Spatz, Tanja Weil and Petra Schwille at their respective Max Planck Institutes.

The main focus of the center involves the development of new cell-like objects and modifying the mechanisms of life through synthetic methods. The challenges will be complex in nature and multidisciplinary, in order to understand and artificially replicate the fundamentals of life, and create self-proliferating systems.

Research at the Max Planck Bristol Centre for Minimal Biology was started in August 2019
