Dr. Pierpaolo Moscariello

I completed my Master's degree in Biotechnologies at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy) in 2014. I worked on my master thesis in the laboratory of Rita Levi-Montalcini, focusing on mechanisms of neuroprotection mediated by Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). I then joined the University Medical Center in Mainz (Germany) and pursued my PhD on the delivery of therapeutics to the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier. During my PhD studies, I had the opportunity to improve my knowledge on complex in vitro models and biological environments. I also participated in joint projects with the University of Ulm and the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP, Germany) aimed at modulating pathophysiology of neurological disorders through the delivery of protein bioconjugates and nanotherapeutics to the brain. In 2018, I joined the MPIP in Mainz (Germany) as postdoctoral fellow, with the goal of inducing perturbations in metabolism-linked processes to address new biomedical challenges in an interdisciplinary effort bridging biology and material science. To comply with 3Rs principles, I additionally developed and optimized 3D cancer models (spheroids, 3D invasion and migration assays).
In January 2023, I joined the Regulatory Science and Innovation Task Force (TRS) at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as Seconded National Expert. Within the Regulatory Science and Academia workstream, I am mostly engaged in Horizon Scanning activities and Regulatory Science Research Needs to identify new innovation trends and regulatory gaps, thus to support EMA in increasing its preparedness to disruptive technology via building an adaptive regulatory environment.
